Sunset Stairwell With Acrylic Clouds

Destined from the outset to receive a warm full-coverage gradient evoking the pinks and oranges of Los Angeles sunsets, Bain's central 3-floor stairwell was thought to need a light-weight dimensional accent to lend the surface some depth. I proposed and ultimately designed a sequence of frosted acrylic slats who's subtle variations in shape and width would come together to form the gentle arcing tufts and wispy contours of streaking clouds which would dissipate at the wall's halfway point.

I also used simple renderings and isometric drawings to confirm that the incremental mounds and valleys of my slat designs would combine to make smooth and satisfying forms once installed.

1. Stairwell Sunset Graphic
An elevation (A) and isometric color mock-up (B) demonstrating the color distribution across a 3-story full-coverage gradient that, while initially styled to perfectly mimic the hues of a Los Angeles sunset, was iterated to represent the sandy shore gradually shifting to the ocean and sky on the upper floors.

2. Acrylic Cloud Layout
C) The layout of 1/2" frosted acrylic slats mounted at 4" increments (D) to form a soft cloudy horizon that dissipates at the bottom of the stairwell's upper outset.

3-6. Panoramic Photo-Composite
A) A 40ft photo-composite of Los Angeles combining a handful of different stock assets and spanning West-Side landmarks like the Getty to the East-Side city skyline. With the skyline complete, a high-resolution photo of crashing waves (B) was manipulated to follow the contour of the San Gabriel mountains (C) to create an entrancing lenticular effect once the 2 sets of images were interlaced.

7-11. Acrylic Bay Signs
A set of distinct signs used to differentiate the different workspaces which are named for beloved neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Each sign was adapted from historic real-world analog (A) with some degree of graphic embellishment.

The hues of gradient coloring each sign corresponds to both the designated color accent of that particular bay and a segment of the main stairwell gradient.

Panoramic Lenticular Corridor

Asked to imbue a featureless hallway with virtually no natural light sources with the same chromatic brightness of other graphic elements in the office, we proposed a set of lenticulars set against a soft backing graphic. From a few different design proposals, the client favored one concept in which a bird's eye view of waves crashing on the shoreline was synchronized with a corridor-long panoramic photo of the San Gabriel Mountains behind Los Angeles' skyline.

Following through this "Synchronized Horizons" concept entailed a fairly involved photo-compositing effort, particularly in collaging together a (more-or-less) geographically sound panorama of Los Angeles from East-to-West. Once that side was complete, editing an image of crashing waves to match the contour of the mountains was a relatively easy lift. The finished result is an immensely gratifying graphical effect, with both walls morphing from city to ocean in real time while sharing a fixed horizon.

Acrylic Bay Signs With Room Placards

Demarcating each of the 5 office zones named for different neighborhoods in Los Angeles, these acrylic bay signs all correspond to a historic real-world analog.

The room placards, similarly modeled after Los Angeles street signs, designate the famous Los Angeles music venues for which each focus room is named.
